can you help me...Animal enforcement has my dog
Fri, 8 Sep 2006 15:08:10 -0400
I found your web site and you seem very knowledgeable on a subject I am up against.  I adopted a puppy of 3 mos. old from the humane shelter on xxxxxxx.  Because he had a tag and they said they had given him his shots I assumed rabies was one of these.

He is now 9 mos. old and found a baby raccoon in our back yard.  The raccoon scratched him on the nose-no blood, no breaking skin.  To be on the safe side I contacted the humane center to make sure he was vaccinated.  They said no to rabies because he was only 3 mos. old.  They had me call Animal control who came into my home and seized my puppy for a 6 MONTHS Quarantine!  I am trying to fight this as I am from XX and spoke to my vet there.  He said 2 weeks is the max for quarantine and the dog was seized 10 days after the scratch.  Do you have any knowledge that will help me.  My whole family is crying endlessly over our dog.

Please call if you can help.

This person originally adopted the dog from a County facility but she did not have her copy of the paperwork due to a fire.

I sent her links to the state and county regulations. She discovered that according to the County regulations in order for the dog to have a tag there had to be a rabies certificate with a number on it that corresponded with the tag Animal Control had issued. She spoke with the Director of Animal Control and the rest of the story is below

Thank you

Deb,

Thank you for all your help.  The information you gave me led me to the head of the Animal Control center, who, after some persuading, got my dog out!  I picked him up yesterday.  I appreciate everything you have researched, we are so happy to have him back.

Thank you! Thank you!  Thank you!

Sincerely,

xxxxxxx

When she first contacted Animal Control she was told that the puppy was not vaccinated for rabies prior to the adoption because he was not old enough, he was only three months old. The law says that all dogs 4 months of age or older must be vaccinated, it does NOT say that a three month old puppy cannot be vaccinated. Apparently the puppy had been vaccinated when he was three months old and his tag was issued at that time. A devoted human who cared enough to research that information saved her family from six months of grief and saved their beloved dog from six months of isolation / impoundment / quarantine.
